AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.1 Reliability
Posted by cotojo on May 27, 2008
I have been assured by Grisoft, the vendors of AVG that V8 WILL install and function on XP Pro and all versions of Vista, but will not install on servers.
I quote the comment posted on behalf of Grisoft: “The information about AVG8 Free not running on XP Pro is NOT correct. XP Pro _is_ supported. AVG Free edition does not install on servers but it can be installed on any Home or Pro version of Windows (including Vista Ultimate).
Also, a new major program update is being prepared that should solve most of the issues mentioned here (and in other forums). By the time this update is released (around mid June), you may also want to test the public beta version of this update (http://beta.avg.com)”

I updated my avg and suddenly my avg scanner thinks it is two months from now, dating itself in April 2009, when it is only February 2009!
It is reporting it is scanning with the current date, but it is ALSO showing the April 2009 date as “scanning,” where it seems forever stuck.
I am concerned this is a virus and my computer privacy and security are being comprimised.
What is going on here?
Help!

Chris It would seem that AVG are increasing the ‘bloat’ on AVG to force users into upgrading to the paid version. Quite honestly, Avast out-performs it with lower resources, better detections, more functionality and still remains free.

I am trying out Avast right now. AVG seems like they are trying to weed out all the free version users out there with version 8. I know a lot of my friends have ditched AVG. Too bad. I thought it would be a staple like Google or Windows.

Constance – You’re most welcome

AVG is creating more lag during scans, and my pc fan was also boosting to full power due to AVG taking too much memory. I changed the scheduled scan to once a week, which really is sufficient.
I run three machines, but have replaced AVG on two which I use regularly. I am still waiting for news on bug fixes and patches for AVG V8.
I have used it for many years and it was always my first choice to install on others machines, and I would recommend it to everyone, but NOT the latest version.
Thank you for your valued comment
Have a great day,
Colin

thanks for the tip. i’m also an AVG supporter and i realised that lately it cause my pc to lag more during scanning.. also i can hear my fan going full blast and really loud..wonder why. could that be the case of AVG v8 taking up more memory for it’s scheduled scan?

Se7en – There are similar posts as many have picked up on the problems with AVG v8, and this one has also been published in ezines and a few other places with good effect. By doing so it reaches a wider audience, and others have also reproduced it from the original ezine article.
Than you for your visit and comment,
Have a good week,
Colin

Tkf57 – You’re most welcome, and thank you for your comment.
I have been assured by Grisoft, the makers of AVG that they are aware of the issues and should have the necessary updates to correct them by mid June.
Personally, I prefer AVG and have used it for many years, and V8 was issued to bring it into line with Vista, but sadly they didn’t quite get it right this time.
As for the email scanner not functioning on 7.5, if you still have the original download exe file reinstall over the top of what you have and it should correct the problem.

Many times, registry error is the main culprit. When you add and remove programs, the files get cluttered over time. Normal way of uninstalling programs will still leave traces of files in the system registry.
Getting a good registry cleaner is important.

excelso – You’re most welcome.
AVG is the finest AntiVirus protection, but V8 has some compatability issues which can cause problems so it is necessary to inform users and also offer alternative methods and fixes.
Have a great day,

Bbrian – I have used AVG for years and it has always been my first choice to install on other peoples machines and also one I have regularly mentioned in posts.
However, with V8 there are some problems that need to be ironed out, in the meantime users need to know how to work around these problems. Hopefully they will be short lived.
Have a great day,
Colin

Tammy – Yes that is what I am talking about …AVG seems to have a few glitches, so if you are having problems it could be worth changing to another AV. I will be posting some soon with more detail, but a-squared and PCTools AV are both very good and links are at bottom of post
Have a great day,
*Hugs*
